Success Stories

Christmas Service Story
One previous Christmas, the CIN program helped the holiday spirit shine by distributing bags of gifts in isolated Southwest communities such as Dennehotso, Kaibeto, Cove, and Twin Lakes in Arizona.

Each gift bag contained useful items including a fire extinguisher, shampoo, soap, socks, toilet tissue, toothpaste, a flash light with batteries, and a phone card. Volunteers from each community helped distributed gift bags to homebound Elders.

Here's what a few participants had to say about the program:

"I would like to thank the Council of Indian Nations and working with Cove Chapter for selecting us in giving us incentives such as fire extinguishers, soap, shampoo, and also the phone cards. We live in remote area and it's long distance to place phone calls to Shiprock, NM and Farmington, NM. I will use the stuff that was given to me during the annual Christmas dinner at Cove Chapter. I am very thankful that this program exists and working with us Navajos. We appreciate it very much. Thank you." - Amy Johnson

"Thank you for the shampoo, fire extinguisher that was given to us at Cove. I will use these stuff for my house. Thank you CIN, even these things cost a lot of money. Thank you for working with Cove Chapter. I live in a remote area and the stores are far away." -Johnny Manygoats

Most of the communities we serve are in remote areas and have very limited phone service, so the phone cards were particularly appreciated.

As Lorrain Johnson Roy, Program Partner Chapter Coordinator, Cove, Arizona, explains, "Our community [members] were excited to receive these phone cards. We live in isolated area and our community members have limited resource and most of the convenient places are about 150-200 miles from where we're located. We issued phone cards to elderly and their children because most of the elderly...only understand their language their children have to assist them in using the phone cards."

Other community members echoed their appreciation:

"I would like to thank you for giving me a phone card. It came in handy during this period of family troubles involving our family members. It will keep us in touch until we can see one another soon. Again, thank you very much for the phone cards. You are all wonderful in helping others." - Glorianna Begay

"Thank you again for your generous donation and I appreciate your sponsors for making this phone card available to the community people of Cove." - Laura Benally
