Food Service Story

A recent food distribution in Dennehotso, Arizona, shows how the CIN program typically reaches out to those in need on reservations in the Southwest. In that food distribution, community volunteers gathered early in the morning to distribute sacks of food items adequate to ensure approximately two months of good meals for recipients. On this day, food sacks included pinto beans, potatoes, mixed fruit, ground beef, canned tuna or chicken, noodles, cereal, and rice. The composition of the food sack changes according to the season and what is available in our warehouse.

Eligible Elders are identified on a distribution sheet according to where they live, and volunteers make sure that the food is delivered to them if they are unable to come pick it up. As with other sites, the Dennehotso program serves homebound Elders living as far as an hour away over dirt and sand paths. Our commitment to reaching these isolated Elders guarantees that someone from the community checks up on them on a regular basis.

These food distributions are held every two months. All the Elders who participate are grateful for the food they receive, and they welcome this caring boost to their small incomes.
