It is the question on every parent’s mind… when and how will my child's school reopen? The answers are unclear but one thing is very clear: Children are the future and we must continue their education.

Many Native American children living on under-resourced reservations face barriers to education:

  • Almost two-thirds of them (61%) live in impoverished or low-income households.
  • The recent surge of layoffs (15%) pales in comparison to reservation joblessness (35-85%, varies by community).
  • The average cost of school supplies keeps rising (about $789 per child in 2020) and this year expect items like face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer to be on the list.
  • About 20% of students on the reservations do not have a computer or internet access, so distance learning is not an option for them.
  • Stores with school supplies and even food are often an hour away.

This year, some reservation schools have been home-delivering paper packets so students without internet can continue their studies. And Deborah, a teacher from Crazy Horse School, shared that many students wait until after Labor Day to start because they don’t have the items they need… like the grandma who called the week before school asking if the students were going to get school supplies. If not, her five grandkids would have to start school in September after her disability check arrived. When Deborah told her about the AIEF school supplies, she said, “Please, send them right away.”

Regardless of any changes in the classroom, school supplies are critical to a child's learning.

PWNA and our American Indian Education Fund (AIEF) program hope to deliver school supplies for at least 15,000 students this year. Will you help us ensure Native American students are not left behind during this pandemic?

You can help by making a donation today — and by spreading the word on your social pages!
